The scutum, which is the Latin word for "shield", has come to be specifically associated with the rectangular, semi-cylindrical body shield carried by ancient Roman legionaries. This Roman shield's curved shape covered the soldier's front and sides giving them excellent protection in battle. It is a well-known fact that one of the Roman warfare strategy is to adapt to their enemy’s tactics or weaponry. This is probably the reason why the Roman army shield’s oval and semi-cylindrical shape has a distinctly similar built like the shields used by the Celts or by the Greeks. With this in mind, one can easily understand how the Roman Army Empire was able to succeed in war and conquests throughout its long history.
