Roman Armor

The Roman armor breastplate called the ‘Iorica Segmentata’ was perhaps the most efficient type of armor used at the height of the Roman Empire. This type of segmented armor was exclusively used in the Roman Empire and as opposed to a single sheet of steel, was made of sections of steel plates joined or welded together by internal leather straps. These strips were arranged horizontally on the soldier’s body, overlapping on a downwards pattern. These surrounded the torso in two halves, being fastened at the front and back. The upper body and shoulders were protected by additional strips ('shoulder guards') and breast- and back plates. The form of the armor allowed for compact storage since it was possible to separate it into four sections. This also allowed for greater flexibility of movement for the soldier in the battlefield.
