Medieval Armor

The earliest form of medieval armor traces its roots back to around 500 B.C. when the Celtic people developed a kind of armor which has iron rings woven together to form some sort of a protective garment. This eventually became known as the chain mail armor and became the well-known type of medieval armor used in those days. The main characteristics of its construction were the interlocking iron or steel rings which were either riveted or welded shut. But one major drawback of using the chain mail armor was that it was not very useful in protecting the soldier from a direct hit. Swords which were long and pointed often ended up cutting through the interlocking rings thus the advent of the plate armor. Plates or disks of steel were added slowly to chain mail armor to protect the vulnerable areas of the soldier’s body. Eventually this progressed into a full body covering armor suit which covered and protected the knight from head to toe.
